BRONCOS NAME CHRIS GOULD ASSISTANT SPECIAL TEAMS COACH

The Denver Broncos on Tuesday named Chris Gould the team’s assistant special teams coach,
Head Coach Vance Joseph announced.

Gould enters his third season with Denver after beginning his NFL coaching career as special teams assistant with the Broncos in 2015. He also has coached special teams units at Elmhurst College (2012) and Syracuse University (2013-14) following a three-year career as a placekicker in the Arena Football League.

During Gould’s two seasons working with Denver’s kickers, placekicker Brandon McManus ranked seventh in the NFL in points scored (252) while connecting on 59-of-69 field goals (85.5%). McManus was a career-best 30-for-35 (85.7%) on field goals in the regular season in 2015 before connecting on all 10 attempts in three playoff games to represent the most all-time in a single postseason without a miss.

In 2016, Gould helped rookie punter Riley Dixon set the NFL single-season rookie record for net punting average (41.3) while opponents registered the seventh-fewest yards per return (6.8) against him.

Gould coached Dixon at Syracuse from 2013-14, as the punter developed into one of the nation’s top performers at his position. Dixon was a Burlsworth Trophy nominee (nation’s most outstanding walk-on) in 2014 and was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award his senior season.

Gould kicked professionally with the Chicago Rush (2010-11) and Arizona Rattlers (2012) of the Arena Football League. He was a member of the Rattlers’ 2012 ArenaBowl XXV championship team.

During his collegiate career as Virginia from 2004-07, Gould punted in all four seasons while taking over as the team’s kicker his junior season. He set school records for most made field goals in a single game (5) and most punts downed inside the 20-yard line (29) in a single season.

Gould’s older brother, Robbie, is a 12-year veteran kicker who spent the 2016 season with the New York Giants. Chris Gould was born on Dec. 10, 1985.
