BRONCOS AGREE TO TERMS WITH JEFF DAVIDSON AS OFFENSIVE LINE COACH

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Saturday agreed to terms with Jeff Davidson to be their offensive line coach, Head Coach Vance Joseph announced.

Davidson has 22 years of coaching experience, including 15 seasons working with the offensive line. He most recently coached that unit in San Diego in 2016 under Broncos Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy.

A former offensive linemen, Davidson played four seasons (1990-93) with Denver and one year (1994) with New Orleans after being selected by the Broncos in the fifth round (111th overall) of the 1990 NFL Draft.

He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Saints from 1995-96 before going on to work with New England (1997-2004), Cleveland (2005-06), Carolina (2007-10), Minnesota (2011-15) and San Diego (2016).

Davidson’s teams have featured top-8 rushing attacks in six of his last eight seasons and seven years overall. Additionally, he has been part of six teams that have finished in the NFL’s top 10 in fewest sacks allowed.

His offensive lines have paved the way for six running backs that have combined for nine individual 1,000-yard rushing campaigns, including one historic 2,000-yard season. Davidson’s units have also blocked for five quarterbacks totaling nine different 3,000-yard passing seasons.

Coaching the offensive line for San Diego in 2016 under McCoy, Davidson’s unit helped second-year back Melvin Gordon rush for 997 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 11 starts. Gordon’s 108.9 scrimmage yards per game ranked fourth in the NFL.

During Davidson’s five seasons (2011-15) as Minnesota’s offensive line coach, the Vikings featured the league’s second-ranked rushing offense (138.1 ypg). Running back Adrian Peterson topped 1,000 rushing yards in three different years during that span, including his 2012 campaign in which he totaled 2,097 yards to represent the second-highest single-season total in NFL history.

Before joining the Vikings, Davidson served as offensive coordinator for Carolina from 2007-10 working alongside McCoy. The Panthers averaged 134.5 rushing yards per game in that span to rank fifth in the league. In 2009, Carolina featured a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Jonathan Stewart (1,133 yds.) and DeAngelo Williams (1,117 yds.).

Davison spent two seasons with Cleveland as the team’s offensive line coach in 2005 and as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator in 2006.

Before joining the Browns, Davidson coached eight seasons (1998-2004) with New England, where he was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams. He began as a tight ends coach with the team in 1997 before becoming assistant offensive line coach from 1998-2001. Davidson coached both the tight end and offensive line units for the Patriots from 2002-04.

During his playing career, Davidson appeared in 44 regular-season games (30 starts) and opened two postseason contests for the Broncos at left tackle and left guard.

He played collegiately at Ohio State University, where he was a team captain and All-Big Ten Conference performer. A graduate of Westerville (Ohio) High School, Davidson was born on Oct. 3, 1967.
