ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos on Saturday agreed to terms with safety Darian Stewart on a four-year contract extension through 2020, Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway announced.
Stewart, who is in his seventh NFL season, has started 56-of-94 regular-season games and all five postseason contests during his career with St. Louis (2010-13), Baltimore (2014) and Denver (2015-pres.). He entered the NFL with the Rams as a college free agent in 2010 from the University of South Carolina.
During his career, Stewart has totaled 299 tackles (218 solo), four sacks (31 yds.), six interceptions (63 yds.), 34 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in the regular season. He also has 14 tackles (11 solo), one sack (8 yds.), two interceptions (8 yds.), three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in the postseason.
Stewart has started 28-of-30 total games in his two seasons with Denver, accounting for eight of his 14 career takeaways (8 INTs, 6 FR). Included in that total is a career-best three takeaways in Week 10 against New Orleans—the most by a Bronco in 15 seasons.
A 36-game starter at South Carolina (50 GP), Stewart finished his collegiate career with 197 tackles, two interceptions, 22 passes defensed, four forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. A graduate of Lee High School in Huntsville, Ala., Stewart was born on Aug. 4, 1988.
“Darian Stewart has been an integral part of our defense for the last two seasons and we’re excited he’ll continue to be a big part of our team for the next four years. He brings tremendous physicality and toughness to our defense, and he displays great leadership on and off the field.”
“This is a life-changing opportunity for me and my family. I love my teammates and coaches as well as our fans. We have a chance to do something great as a team. I want to keep winning, and I'm excited about what the future holds.”
