ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Monday were awarded center Sam Brenner off waivers from the Miami Dolphins and waived guard Shelley Smith, it was announced.

Brenner (6-2, 310 pounds) is a fourth-year player who appeared in 10 games (4 starts) for the Dolphins during his first three seasons after being signed by Miami as a college free agent in 2013 from the University of Utah.

He started four games at left guard for the Dolphins as a rookie in 2013 before spending the majority of his second year on the club’s practice squad. Brenner saw action in three games for Miami this season prior to being waived on Monday.

A two-year starter for the Utes, Brenner played in 50-of-51 possible games and started 26 contests during his collegiate career. He allowed just two combined sacks during the course of his junior and senior campaigns.

Brenner, who attended Oceanside (Calif.) High School, was born on April 27, 1990.
