ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, the National Football League informed the Broncos on Thursday.

This represents the first such honor of Ware’s career and the 10th conference defensive player of the month recognition in Broncos history since the award was initiated in 1986.

Ware helped lead the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense (259.0 ypg) in September as he tied for first in the AFC and ranked second in the NFL with 3.5 sacks in three games. The only NFL player to post a sack in each game this season, Ware’s sack total helped him pass Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Ricky Jackson into 13th place on the NFL’s all-time list (130.5 career sacks).

He also paced the league with 11 quarterback hits in September—three more than any other player—and added 10 tackles.
