BRONCOS AWARDED TE JAKE MURPHY OFF WAIVERS; PLACE NT MARVIN AUSTIN ON INJURED RESERVE
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Thursday were awarded tight end Jake Murphy off waivers from Cincinnati and placed nose tackle Marvin Austin (groin) on injured reserve, it was announced.
Murphy (6-4, 252 pounds) is a first-year player who competed on practice squads with Miami and Cincinnati as a rookie in 2014. He spent the preseason with Oakland last year after being signed by the Raiders as a college free agent from the University of Utah.
In 30 career games (14 starts) with the Utes, Murphy totaled 63 receptions for 830 yards (13.2 avg.) with 10 touchdowns. He was a Class 5A All-State selection at American Folk High School in Alpine, Utah.
Murphy’s brother, Shawn, is a former NFL offensive lineman who most recently competed with the Broncos during the 2011 preseason. His father, Dale, played 18 seasons in Major League Baseball (Braves, Phillies, Rockies) and a was a six-time NL All-Star and two-time NL Most Valuable Player.
Murphy was born on Sept. 21, 1989, in Atlanta.
