ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday were assigned running back Kolby Smith off waivers from Kansas City, it was announced. He was waived by the Chiefs on Monday. Also on Tuesday, the club waived rookie linebacker Korey Bosworth and first-year punter A.J. Trapasso.

Smith (5-foot-11, 219 pounds) is a fourth-year player who played in 27 games (9 starts) for Kansas City and accounted for 540 rushing yards on 162 carries (3.3 avg.) with three touchdowns to go along with 34 receptions for 209 yards (6.1 avg.). He entered the league as a fifth-round draft choice (148th overall) by the Chiefs in the 2007 NFL Draft.

He rushed 316 times for 1,892 yards (6.0 avg.) with 18 touchdowns during his career at the University of Louisville, including a career-high 891 yards on 154 carries (5.8 avg.) with seven touchdowns as a senior in 2006.

An All-Big Bend Area selection at Rickards High School in Tallahassee, Fla., Smith was born on Dec. 15, 1984.
