BRONCOS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FREE AGENT C WILL MONTGOMERY

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.— The Denver Broncos on Tuesday agreed to terms with free agent center Will Montgomery on a one-year contract, Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway announced.

Montgomery (6-3, 304 pounds) is a ninth-year player who appeared in 90 career regular-season games (63 starts) and one playoff contest in his first eight NFL seasons with Carolina (2006), the New York Jets (2007-08) and Washington (2008-13).

During his career, Montgomery has started 46 games at center, 10 at right guard and seven at left guard. He opened every possible game for the Redskins during the last three seasons, competing at center in all but two of those contests. In those 49 total games, he participated in 3,387 of 3,393 (99.8%) possible snaps on offense.

Selected by Carolina in the seventh round (234th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft from Virginia Tech, Montgomery opened 4-of-6 games played on the interior line as a rookie for the Panthers and Broncos current Head Coach John Fox. He was signed by the Jets in 2007 and played in seven contests (2 starts) for the club.

After spending time on the active rosters with the Jets and Redskins in 2008, he went on to play 77-of-80 possible games for Washington from 2009-13.

A versatile center/guard at Virginia Tech, Montgomery appeared in 43 games (36 starts) for the Hokies and after working his way up from a walk-on defensive tackle. He was named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week three times as a senior in 2005 and was a two-time recipient of the Excalibur Award, the top honor in Virginia Tech’s strength and conditioning program.

Montgomery was a two-way lineman at Centreville High School in Clifton, Va., where he helped lead his team to the Virginia AAA Division 6 state championship as a senior.

He earned his bachelor’s degree (business information technology) and master’s degree (health promotion) from Virginia Tech in addition to participating in the Harvard Business School MBA program offered by the NFL during the 2012 offseason.

Montgomery was born on February 13, 1983, in Brunswick, Maine.
