ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos have selected running back Knowshon Moreno as their2013 Ed Block Courage Award winner, it was announced on Friday.

Broncos Running Backs Coach Eric Studesville also will be recognized by the Ed Block Courage Foundation for overcoming personal adversity.

Moreno was selected for the Ed Block Courage Award honoring players who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage. The fifth-year player, who tore his ACL during the 2011 season and suffered another knee injury during Denver’s AFC Divisional Playoff Game against Baltimore in January, has endured to start all 12 games for the Broncos this season. He leads the team with 202 rushes for 842 yards (4.2 avg.) and nine touchdowns in addition to catching 42 passes for 414 yards (9.9 avg.) and two scores.

One of just five NFL players to post at least 800 yards rushing and 400 yards receiving through 12 games this season, Moreno is on pace to become the first player in franchise history to eclipse 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards.

The Ed Block Courage Award is named in honor of Ed Block, the longtime head athletic trainer of the Baltimore Colts, who was a pioneer in his profession and a respected humanitarian.

Recipients for the award are selected by their teammates for team effort as well as individual performance.

Studesville, who is in his fourth season as running backs coach for the Broncos, is receiving special consideration from the Ed Block Courage Foundation for his perseverance following the sudden and tragic loss of his parents, Al and Jan Studesville, in June.

With Studesville’s help this season, Denver’s running game has produced nearly 1,500 yard and 14 touchdowns and has averaged more than 200 yards per game during the last two weeks to rank second in the NFL during that span. Moreno leads the team with 842 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground, while rookie running back Montee Ball has contributed 379 yards and three scores, including his first career 100-yard rushing effort last week against Kansas City (13 att. for 117 yds.).
