BRONCOS AND XCEL ENERGY TEAM UP TO TACKLE CARBON EMISSIONS

DENVER –  The Denver Broncos are proud to announce that they will once again partner with Xcel Energy’s Windsource® program to power all home games during the 2012 NFL season. This will be the third consecutive season that the Broncos offset 100 percent of the electricity used to power Sports Authority Field at Mile High, significantly shrinking the team’s carbon footprint.

”We are very appreciative of our partnership with Xcel Energy, said Stadium General Manager Andy Gorchov. “Thanks to their support, in addition to the Windsource® program, we have significantly improved the overall operating efficiency of the stadium through lighting retrofits, recommissioning studies and other energy conservation efforts that have successfully reduced the stadium’s energy consumption every year.”

By the end of the 2012-13 season, and including the last two seasons, the Broncos will have purchased more than 2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy, which is equal to 3,949,649 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). This amount is the equivalent to the carbon sequestered annually by 45,937 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. It is also equivalent to the CO2 emissions from:
·         200,844 gallons of gasoline consumed
·         The electricity use of 223 homes for one year
·         74,647 propane cylinders used for home barbeques

“We are thrilled to be a part of Game Plan Green for another season,” said Steve Mudd, Windsource® product manager for Xcel Energy. “The Broncos’ participation in Windsource® demonstrates their desire not only to work towards a cleaner environment, but also to build awareness about renewable energy and its ability to power our homes and businesses reliably and cost-effectively. We commend the Broncos for building a team that not only puts up touchdowns, but also helps put up wind turbines and solar panels in Colorado”.

The partnership with Xcel Energy helps support renewable energy projects across the state of Colorado, including the new Limon I and Limon II Wind Energy Centers in Limon. Delivering more than 400 megawatts (MW) of new wind capacity, the Limon projects will bring Xcel Energy’s total wind capacity in Colorado to 2,146 MW.

More than 30,000 homes and 900 businesses currently support renewable energy across the Xcel Energy service area in Colorado. Xcel Energy customers interested in purchasing renewable energy for their homes or businesses should call Xcel Energy at 1-800- 895-4999 or visit www.xcelenergy.com/windsource. Customers can also sign up for the Windsource® program at the next two Denver Broncos home games in the Xcel Energy area of the vendor village.
